His previous positions include Research Fellow, Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and Assistant Professor, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; Research Scientist, Artificial Intelligence Department, Bolt Beranek and Newman Laboratories, Cambridge, Mass; Senior Scientist at the Leibniz Institute for the German Language in Mannheim.&nbsp; He is an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Linguistic Society of America, an Honorary Member of the Foundation of Logic, Language, and Information, and the recipient of a Medal of Merit from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. He has served as scientific director of several research infrastructure initiatives for language research data at the national level, including CLARIN-D, CLARIAH-DE and Text+ (<a href=\"https:\/\/text-plus.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">text-plus.org<\/a>).&nbsp; He has also been a member of the Executive Board of the ESFRI-Initiative CLARIN. His research interests include the computational modelling of language (particularly of morphology, syntax, and semantics) and of language variation with special emphasis on the use of machine learning approaches. He has published extensively in the fields of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and cognitive science. His primary research interests include distributional semantics and its applications to linguistic and cognitive studies, computational lexical semantics, computational models of verb argument structure, as well as tools and resources for NLP. In 2020, he received the \u201c10-Year Test-of-Time Award\u201d from the Association for Computational Linguistics. Author of over 250 publications in leading national and international journals and conference proceedings, he also published the volume Distributional Semantics (Cambridge University Press, 2023) in the Studies in Natural Language Processing series. He earned his mathematics degree in 1983 from&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.math.elte.hu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">E\u00f6tv\u00f6s Lor\u00e1nd University, Budapest&nbsp;<\/a>where his advisor was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Miklos_Ajtai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mikl\u00f3s Ajtai<\/a>. He earned his linguistics degree in 1991 from&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/linguistics.stanford.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stanford University<\/a>, where his advisor was&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stanford.edu\/~kiparsky\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paul Kiparsky<\/a>. His research interests include all mathematical aspects of natural language processing, speech recognition, and OCR.
