Keynote Speakers

Professor William Lamb is one of the leading voices on artificial intelligence and endangered languages. He holds a Personal Chair in Gaelic Ethnology and Linguistics at the University of Edinburgh, where his work spans Gaelic linguistics, oral tradition and language technology. His recent Scottish Gaelic: A Comprehensive Grammar (Routledge, 2024) — the product of three decades of research — has been widely acclaimed as the definitive guide to the language. In 2024, he completed an MSc in Speech and Language Processing with Distinction, deepening a research programme in AI for low-resource languages that has attracted major funding from the UKRI, Bòrd na Gàidhlig and the Scottish Government. His projects have shaped Gaelic speech recognition, text-to-speech and language modelling, and his public commentary has appeared in NatureThe Times and across the BBC. He serves on the Board of Management of Faclair na Gàidhlig and on the Executive Council of the Scottish Gaelic Texts Society.
